There is nothing better than having a hairstyle that looks good, feels awesome and stays in place. The secret weapon is having some “hold” in your hair. Hair gel can work great, but what about all of those harmful ingredients? Most hair gels contain chemicals and toxins that can be harmful such as parabens, fragrance and synthetic colors. Fortunately there are natural alternatives to the traditional store-bought hair gel. Flaxseeds are an excellent way to make your own hair gel product, which is best suited for wavy or curly hair.
To start out, soak one or two teaspoons of flaxseeds overnight. Soaking the seeds will allow for a larger yield of the gel substance.
The next day, combine the mixture with about one more cup of water in a small pot. Place it on the stove and bring it to a boil over high heat. Be sure to stir the mixture occasionally.
When the mixture starts to boil and bubble up, make sure to gently stir the mixture constantly. When the mixture’s consistency turns into a thin foamy jelly, you can then reduce the heat.
If the flaxseeds remain suspended in the jelly, turn off the heat and strain the seeds from the mixture into a small dish. If you see that the flaxseeds are still sinking to the bottom of the pot, let it stay on the stove for a bit longer.
Once the gel substance has cooled down, feel free to add essential oils or even aloe vera to the mix. Whisk the mixture together with a fork so that there aren’t any clumps. The gel should have the consistency of egg whites.
Finally, pour the gel into the container that you wish to use it out of. Store the container in the refrigerator and you will be able to keep the mixture for up to two weeks.
